Belmore Equestrian is one of the first IEA Teams in Zone 9 (WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, and AK). The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) is the organization that feeds into the college riding programs and scholarships are available. In 2023-2024, there were a total of 1,453 IEA high school and middle school Hunt Seat and Dressage teams across the country. IEA again broke membership records during the 2023-2024 regular season, with more than 13,050 riders participating and over 14,975 total members nationwide.
Belmore Equestrian is very proud to be one of the teams in the top third of the nation by sending 5 riders who have earned their way through the competition season to compete at National Finals. This is the
The IEA format utilizes a unique draw-based competition format where the riders draw from the horses deemed appropriate for their assigned class and ride that horse in their class. IEA riders must develop their catch-riding skills as very little to no warm-up practice is allowed before each class. All tack and horses are provided by the show host. In this show format, it is all about the rider’s equitation and skill which is why this format levels the playing field; it is not about the horse, it is about the rider.
We are now accepting new Competition Team members for both Hunt Seat and Dressage teams. There are various levels from flat only to those who would be showing 3’6″ and higher for hunt seat and for dressage beginner riders thru those showing 2nd level and higher. Riders must be in a lesson program (ours or another approved program) and accepted onto the team. We even have some riders from out of state who come and compete on our team – so we are very flexible!
Team members must be in grades 4th-8th (for the Futures Team) or 9th-12th (for the High School Team) and we now offer an adult team for 21+.
- You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your amazing horsemanship, riding a horse selected by draw at the show, and potentially earn college scholarships, be scouted to college equestrian teams, and even potentially go to a national championships;
- At the 2023 Nationals, IEA awarded over $1million in scholarships!
- It doesn’t matter which school you are attending (and home-schoolers are welcome).
- You do not need to have your own horse.
- English riding only at this time (both hunt seat & dressage);
- This is a year round sports team experience.
- We do all sorts of fun things in addition to the IEA shows – we go to schooling and rated shows have camps and mini-camps, volunteer at horse shows, and generally get to be barn rats together to the extent that you would like.
Costs to participate:
- $250 Sign-Up Fee
- IEA National Membership $60-$75 per discipline. This cost is for each team you join and we offer both a hunt seat and dressage team.
- You must be in an approved lesson program – either through Belmore Equestrian or another approved lesson program. We do expect you to be taking lessons at least twice per week from August – February and at least once per week the rest of the year.
- Show costs are in addition and IEA Shows are normally Sept-March so you have time to save and/or fund raise. Each member can participate in up to 5 IEA regular season shows in each discipline (expected cost $95 plus coaching fees per show) per year (plus Zone Finals and Nationals if you qualify!).
Belmore Team Practices: - Will be scheduled within the regular lesson schedule so chat about what will work for you!
