MISSION

Time With Tails provides activities that promote discipline, self-esteem, motivation, social development, life skills, academic achievement, and physical fitness through year-round equestrian programs that encourage long term participation. In addition, educational and cultural resources are provided to participants and the community-at-large.

What is Time With Tails?

Time With Tails is a 501 c3, non-profit community-based prevention program that aids disadvantaged or historically marginalized youth and adults, including military veterans,  through constructive activities centered on horsemanship, equine sports and education. The program is housed at Belmore Equestrian, located in Rochester, WA. Time with Tails is designed as a long-term program where participants are expected to commit to a minimum of one year of participation.

We also raise funds and do work with other equestrian activities in the community.  One of the ongoing activities we work with as needed is evacuation of horses in the event of a natural disaster, such as wildfire.  Sept 8, 2020, we assisted in the evacuation of 45 horses to our training center and the team pulled together to prepare the barns, stalls and paddocks, meet the trailers of horses as they arrived, and assisted as needed in their care.

How Does It Work?

Time With Tails provides participants with a positive outlet for their energy and an alternative to negative (or no) activities . Participants develop discipline, responsibility, and life skills through training, riding, and performing horse care and barn management chores. They also develop communication skills, confidence, self-esteem, and the skills necessary to compete successfully in their chosen activities. The participants are allowed to choose among various horse sports, although everyone starts with basic horsemanship skills both mounted and unmounted.  The horses naturally mirror and respond to positive interactions and so participants receive immediate feedback based on their behavior.

Why does it work?

Time With Tails programs and activities are designed to explore new ways of engaging participants in significant educational, social and cultural experiences that are otherwise unavailable. They build relationships and develop problem-solving skills through spirited teamwork and cooperation. Activities at the barn as well as during competitions and trips allow participants to interact with diverse people and to be exposed to a variety of new experiences.

Additionally, Belmore Equestrian becomes a “home away from home” for participants. Spending time at the barn helps kids develop family-like relationships that become integral components of their lifestyles. Participation in Time With Tails teaches that the combination of hard work and supportive relationships leads to success.

This program provides such a valuable service to the youth in our community, but it is a very expensive program to run.  We work on a cost-sharing basis with the families with the balance of the program costs being covered by the donations to Time With Tails.  The more donations we get the more kids we can help.

Additionally, we have youth in the area that would love to participate, but cannot afford to even with our reduced program fees – so your donations could go to help in that area.

Regardless – please know that every single dollar helps  – so please spread the word and DONATE!  And if you happen to work for an employer that provides matching contributions, be sure to let us know!
